Tamarama House: Tamarama

COMPLETED 2018 | FOX JOHNSTON ARCHITECTS

Designed for a large family, the two-storey five-bedroom was a collaboration between Fox Johnston Architects and Melbourne modular prefab experts, Modscape. Built on the footprint of a demolished bungalow, Tamarama House uses nine Modscape modules to achieve its 340 square-metre interior, not including the 60 square metres of outdoor deck. The efficient upstairs layout comfortably contains five bedrooms and two bathrooms, with space and privacy for adults and children. Downstairs, public space is sequenced for visual links (surveillance) between kitchen, living and dining rooms, outdoor living spaces and a detached rumpus / study. A fine-tuned arrangement of modules and façade treatment capture sunlight in winter and filter it in summer, while adding textural layers to the façade. Skylights and clerestory windows also help maximise interior light while aiding cross ventilation.
